Diploma in Pastoral Ministry & Leadership

Archdiocese of Liverpool and Diocese of Salford - Diploma in Pastoral Ministry & Leadership in partnership with Loyola University Chicago Institute of Pastoral Studies and in association with Liverpool Hope University

The Diploma in Pastoral Ministry and Leadership focusses especially on developing the art of accompaniment in leadership over three years. Supplementing the core two year, online learning course
described below are three complementary elements essential to good leadership: leadership workshops; a supervised pastoral project and an independent research project.

Online Learning
A new and unique opportunity is now available to students from the Archdiocese of Liverpool and Diocese of Salford to participate in online learning for the 10 core modules which will form the foundation of the Diploma. These will be provided by Loyola University, Chicago leading to an award of a Certificate in Pastoral Ministry.

The customised certificate will consist of 10 six-week modules delivered in an online format allowing participants the freedom and flexibility of study in their own home. Integral to the course will be three days for participants to meet each other face to face, facilitated by Sr Catherine Darby SND and Mrs Veronica Murphy who are the UK coordinators for the course. They will gather students together for prayer, reflection and creative engagement with the overall themes. Participants will need to be serious about their
own faith development, willing to serve in the local church and have competent computer skills.

Learning Style
The course will model adult learning and shared praxis and be rooted in
theological texts and the lived experience of participants. Each module will require approximately 20 hours of time for online engagement, reading and reflection.

Leadership Workshops
These workshops provide opportunities for students to develop their interpersonal skills alongside their ability to work with and in a variety of group settings. They will aim to develop the skills essential for reflective leadership within a context of change and transition. As well as providing opportunities for developing effective catechetical skills they will provide opportunities for integrating the taught elements from their online learning experience. Four evening workshops will be offered in years one and two with a further two Saturday workshops provided in year three. The workshops available are as follows:

Year 1
January-December 2018

• Skills for Reflective Leadership: Thursday 15March
• Ways of Working with Scripture I: Thursday 14 June
• Ways of Working with Scripture II: Thursday 27 September
• Use of Digital Technology and Image for Catechesis: Thursday 8 November

Year 2
January-December 2019

• Facilitation Skills
– dates to be confirmed.

Year 3
January-December 2020

• Leading Prayer and Worship
• Change and Transition
– these workshops will take place on two Saturdays, dates to be confirmed.

Through our long association with Liverpool Hope University we are able to offer a Continuing Professional Development Award [C.P.D.] for each of these ten workshops

These workshops will be available across the dioceses at a cost of £25 but are included as part of the Diploma fees.

Once the online certificate course has been completed two further elements will be required to achieve the Diploma award.

Pastoral Project
Students will have decided on an aspect of pastoral ministry and leadership that they wish to focus on. They will design, implement and evaluate a significant piece of work within their chosen pastoral context and will receive pastoral accompaniment during it.

Independent Research Project
Through negotiation with a personal tutor, students will be able to deepen and develop their understanding of one area of learning that has become significant for them during the two years of their certificate course. They will research and write a 3500-word study on a question agreed with their tutor.

Getting Started
The new Certificate and Diploma courses will begin with the Induction Gathering on Saturday 20 January. Enrolment for either course must be completed no later than 15 December 2017.

Costs
The full Diploma costs £2500 over the three years. This will be payable in three instalments: £1000 payable no later than 31 December 2017; £1000 payable no later than 31 December 2018 and £500 payable no later than December 2019. Each instalment will be non-refundable under normal circumstances. An increasing number of parishes are willing to support students by offering help with the cost of the Diploma.
