Whilst the references to legislation and statutory guidance are specific to maintained schools, many of the principles will be relevant to all schools. All schools are, for example, encouraged to consider adopting the Code of Conduct for Governing Bodies which has been prepared by the National Governors' Association and adapted to reflect the particular responsibilities of governors in Catholic schools.
The page also contains documents setting out guidance for governing bodies and their advisers, in the appointment of headteachers and deputy headteachers to help and guide Governors to fulfil their statutory responsibilities to preserve and develop the Catholic character of the school in relation to the appointment of teachers. The governing bodies of Catholic Schools are the employers of the staff at the school to whom they should give clear guidelines about the Catholic character of education and life in their school.
As employers, the governing bodies must also issue the appropriate contract of employment and associated documentation as published by the Catholic Education Service and these can be accessed via the ‘recruitment’ page on this website.
This guidance will be updated regularly and suggestions as to future content are very warmly welcomed. If you have any comments, questions and suggestions please contact the Education Department on 0151 522 1071 or at aes@rcaol.co.uk
