Cathedral liturgy: November 2019

By Canon Anthony O'Brien, Cathedral dean

• We celebrate the Feast of Christ the King on the weekend of 23/24 November. Archbishop Malcolm will preside at the Solemn Mass at 11am on the Sunday. Please come along and join us in celebrating our Cathedral's Patronal Feast.

• Sunday 10 November was Remembrance Sunday, and as an act of remembrance for those fallen in war and for the faithful departed the musical setting for the Solemn Mass that day was Mozart's Requiem. The youth choir also sang excerpts from the Fauré Requiem at the 7pm evening Mass in the Crypt. The Chapter of Canons then met at 12.15 on Tuesday 12 November for their meeting as well as their annual Mass to pray for the deceased clergy of the Archdiocese.

• On Thursday 7 November we held an evening of celebration for the life of Saint John Henry Newman. The event was jointly hosted by our two Cathedrals and began with a joint Choral Evening Prayer at 6pm. This was followed by a shared lecture on Newman's influence on both the Catholic and Anglican Churches with a chance for questions afterwards. The shared talk was given by Canon Dr Rod Garner and Monsignor Rod Strange, who have both spoken and written extensively on Newman's life and thought. It was an enjoyable and informative evening.

• Sunday 3 November was the Memorial of Saint Martin de Porres, on whose feast I was ordained 40 years ago. Naturally, I thanked God for four decades in the priesthood – and with the tomb of Archbishop Worlock located in the Saint Joseph Chapel of the Cathedral, I still feel he is also keeping an eye on me after all these years.
