Archbishop Patrick Kelly was the Celebrant as parishioners from St Teresa of Avila Parish in Birkdale celebrated the 100th anniversary of the consecration of their church.
The parish was opened in July 1884, but the church was not built until 1898. 'Until then the community had used the front wing of St Teresa's school as it's place of worship,' said Parish Priest, Canon John Gaine. 'It was not consecrated until the parish had become a stable and secure community.'
The consecration was finally conducted in September 1910 by Bishop Thomas Whiteside, who was later to serve as Archbishop after the establishment of Liverpool as a Metropolitan See in 1911.
