Obituary of Reverend Raymond Walker

Former Parish Priest of St Paul of the Cross, Burtonwood, Father Raymond Walker, died on the morning of Sunday 20 February at the age of 96.

He was born on 20 October 1914 in St Helens, the son of John and Theresa Walker. His younger brother, Father Basil Walker, is also a priest of the Archdiocese.

Father Raymond was educated at Windleshaw School, St Helens, and studied for the priesthood at St Joseph’s College, Upholland. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Chapel at Upholland on 19 September 1942.

In September 1942 he was appointed to St Anthony, Scotland Road, and later that year was appointed Chaplain to the Forces, spending twelve months in Germany. In August 1947 he was appointed to Our Lady of Lourdes, Southport, where he remained until 1953 when he moved to St Peter and St Paul, Crosby. In 1958 he was appointed to St Margaret Mary, Knotty Ash, and in 1959 moved to St Mary, Chorley.

In 1963 he received an appointment as Chaplain to Rainhill Hospital. In October 1978 he was appointed Parish Priest of St Paul, Burtonwood, where he remained until his retirement in November 1987.

His body will be received into Ince Blundell for Mass at 5.30 pm on Thursday 3 March. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon on Friday 4 March at St Julie’s, St Helens.
