Be a Chorister for a Day

The hunt is on for new boy choristers for Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral.  Each year around six places become available in the boy choristers of the Cathedral Choir.  ‘It is wonderful for us to be able to offer musically talented young people such opportunities’ says Cathedral Director of Music, Christopher McElroy.
All the choristers are educated at the Cathedral choir schools: Runnymede St Edward’s School and St Edward’s College.  Each day in addition to normal schools lessons, the choristers rehearse before school and sing services in the Cathedral.  Choristers also receive individual singing lessons each week and play instruments.
Being in the Cathedral Choir isn’t all hard work, according to Charles Warrington (aged 13) the present Head Chorister of the cathedral choir: 'being a part of the cathedral choir is great fun because you make lifelong friends, improve your football/table tennis skills, visit new places and the whole experience is one to treasure.'
2013 saw one of the Cathedral’s boy choristers, Jack Topping, sign an international record deal with DECCA records, leading to him reaching number one in the classical charts just before Christmas!  Whilst not every chorister turns out to be a famous soloist, they all receive a very high level of musical training and many opportunities to use their talents.
Choir Director Christopher McElroy explains that the Cathedral is looking for‘boys aged 7-10 who have a good clear voice, a good musical ear and a passion for excelling in all that they do!’
Boys who are interested have an opportunity to ‘try out’ a day with the choir to find out whether it is something they would be interested in.  On Sunday 2nd February the Cathedral is holding a ‘Be a Chorister for a Day’ event, where boys in years 3-5 can come along and experience a day in the life of a Cathedral chorister, culminating in singing in a service with the Cathedral Choir in the Cathedral.  Voice trials (auditions) for the choir are being held on Saturday 8th February.
