A Kirkby coffee shop that trains adults with learning disabilities is almost £400 better off thanks to the fundraising efforts of a local construction company.
Staff at Portal Construction NW Ltd took time off from building projects in Knowsley Business Park to get on the oche for a charity darts night which raised £389.33 for The Courtyard Café training facility in Kirkby.
The café was set up through the combined efforts of Nugent Care, Knowsley Working Well and Knowsley Chamber of Commerce. It provides a healthy-eating option for people working in Knowsley Business Park but, moreover, offers training and employment to young people with learning disabilities and other vulnerable youngsters at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training).
Darren Roberts, social enterprise manager at the café, said that every penny of the donation will be used to develop the training facility for the students. His hope is that The Courtyard will become a hub for community, business, health and social care groups with a particular emphasis on social enterprise.
