Schools Singing Programme

Developing a lifelong love of singing

Our Schools Singing Programme currently works with over 2,000 children in our Catholic schools every week!

What we do

Our programme seeks to evangelise the young people of our schools by exposing them to the beauty, goodness and truth of Jesus Christ and his Church, in order to prepare them for their future role in society.

Our work has brought thousands of children to the Metropolitan Cathedral to lead the music in services and concerts including a choir of over 1000 for the Good Shephard Mass in June 2023. We have also established the Knowsley Catholic Children's Choir in Huyton, which has brought together pupils from 10 different primary schools in the area.

Features of the programme

Our Choral Directors deliver weekly singing sessions in school and have developed a scheme of work for all pupils from Year 1 to Year 6, based on the Model Music Curriculum and working towards principles set out in the National Plan for Music Education. The Schools Singing Programme aims to aid evangelisation through a love of singing and performing sacred and secular music across the Archdiocese. Schools are often invited to take part in large services at the Cathedral such as the Good Shepherd Mass or the Schools Advent Service.

Children who take a particular interest in singing are given the opportunity to join an area choir made up of like-minded students from schools in their area. The first of these choirs to be established was the Knowsley Catholic Children’s Choir (KCCC). In it's short existence, KCCC have already sung for an audience of around 800 at the Cathedral at Christmas led Sunday Mass in three different parish churches in the area, been the headline act for an awards ceremony, and performed in concert with Liverpool Cathedral Junior Choir!

The learning opportunities you have provided have been of the highest quality as well as being thoroughly enjoyed by all. Please keep up the excellent work!"
