Danny Townley has been with the archdiocese since January2022 and has sung with the Cathedral choir since 2013.
As Director of the Schools Singing Programme, he manages a team of 10 Choral Directors and supports singing in partner schools across the archdiocese.
No two days are the same. Some days he delivers singing sessions to classes of children, while other days he is supporting his team in their schools or liaising with headteachers to develop new partnerships.
The Schools Singing Programme delivers high-quality singing provision in partnership with schools across the archdiocese. “We visit schools on a weekly basis and deliver a scheme of work that covers the music curriculum and works alongside the Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly,” Danny explains.
The programme is now partnered with 37 schools, and weekly singing sessions give children the chance to develop their skills while enjoying music and performing together. Schools are often invited to take part in major services at the Cathedral, such as the Good Shepherd Mass or the School's Advent Service, bringing children and their families closer to the life of the Church.
Danny particularly enjoys the challenge and variety of his work. “I love seeing the programme grow and forming new relationships with schools, headteachers, and multi-academy trusts. Every school is different, and finding the best ways to support them is rewarding,” he says.
“What’s most satisfying is knowing that the work we do gives thousands of children opportunities they might not otherwise have: to sing, perform, and experience music in a way that also connects them with their faith. It’s great to see children enjoying themselves, developing their confidence, and sometimes discovering a love of music they didn’t know they had.”
Danny’s teaching degree and years of experience in musical education are central to his work. “It really helps to understand how schools operate and what they need from us,” he says. He also has a 16-year career as a professional singer, which informs his teaching and support for both children and colleagues.
Looking ahead, Danny is excited about the programme’s continued growth and increasing visibility across the archdiocese. “As we expand, more children and families can experience the joy of singing and the positive impact it has on their lives. Seeing that reach grow is what makes this so rewarding.”
