Over Holy Week, Liverpool Met Cathedral hosted the central celebrations of the Church's year.

Over Holy Week and Easter, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral hosted the central celebrations of the Church’s year, marking the journey from the Lord’s Passion to the joy of the Resurrection.

This year was particularly significant as it was Archbishop John Sherrington’s first Holy Week in the Archdiocese of Liverpool since his installation.

Photos from across the week at the Cathedral are shared throughout this story, showing key moments from each of the liturgies.

Chrism Mass – Wednesday of Holy Week

Clergy from across the archdiocese gathered at the Cathedral for the Chrism Mass, during which they renewed their commitment to priestly service. The Holy Oils used in the sacraments throughout the coming year were also blessed and consecrated.

Mass of the Lord’s Supper – Maundy Thursday

This solemn yet intimate liturgy commemorated the Last Supper. The celebration included the washing of feet and concluded with a period of watching before the Blessed Sacrament, ending with Night Prayer.

Celebration of the Lord’s Passion – Good Friday

The Passion of Christ was proclaimed and sung in full, followed by Solemn Intercessions, Holy Communion, and the Veneration of the Cross.

Easter Vigil and First Mass of Easter – Holy Saturday

The Easter Vigil marked the beginning of the Easter celebration, beginning in darkness before the lighting of the Paschal Candle. Adults were baptised and received into the Church during the liturgy. The celebrant was Archbishop John Sherrington.

Easter Sunday Solemn Mass – Easter Sunday

The Cathedral gathered in celebration of the Resurrection of Christ at one of the most significant Masses of the year, as the Easter season was proclaimed with joy.
