Sunday 27 July marks this year’s World Grandparents and Elderly Day – a day that was established by Pope Francis in 2021. It is held annually on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
The theme for this year's celebration is "Blessed are those who have not lost hope" (cf. Sir 14:2).
The day is an opportunity to recognise the important role of grandparents and the elderly in families and society, and to show them love and appreciation. It is also a time to reflect on how their presence can be a sign of hope for future generations.
How to celebrate World Grandparents and Elderly Day
- Pray
Remember in your prayers grandparents and the elderly, a suggested prayer is below:
For grandparents and elderly, may these cherished members of our families continue to bring gifts of wisdom, experience and love. As they share with us their lives of faith and good example may we show our appreciation by our support of them in times of need.
- Visit
Consider visiting an elderly member of the community on this special date. Talk and pray with them.
- Include young people in the celebration
Perhaps during Mass, children and young people can bless the grandparents and elderly. There could also be a grandparents and elderly focus during children’s liturgy.
- Reminisce
Remember your grandparents by doing something they loved (make a recipe that reminds you of them, listen to their favourite music, etc.)
