Attendees at World Youth Day (WYD) in Lisbon (from 1-6 August 2023) are warmly invited to attend a free preview of the pilot episode of the forthcoming documentary series.

The series, called Zero Hunger, is filmed by Kinnane Brothers and features Mary’s Meals founder and CNN Hero Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow.

This first viewing will be held on 1 August 2023 from 3-4pm (WEST) at Cinema Sao Jorge, Lisbon and is part of the official itinerary of the Youth Festival programme.

Zero Hunger is the first episode in a documentary series that showcases extraordinary individuals taking bold steps to improve their own communities, including some remarkable stories of people in Turkana (a drought-afflicted area of northern Kenya) who are coming together under challenging circumstances to end child hunger.

The Tuesday evening screening event at WYD will be hosted by volunteer Youth Ambassadors of Mary’s Meals, who will invite those attending the event to play their part in ending child hunger. It is hoped that this event will foster meaningful connections between young people of many nationalities who are committed to positive change and give them a sense of the charity’s global presence and collective action.

The event will also include presentations from two young students, Joyce and Vanessa, who used to receive Mary’s Meals in Malawi and are now High School graduates. Joyce and Vanessa will share their experience of receiving daily meals in school and how something so simple made a difference to their stories. Another student, Sandra Chilimani, who continues to receive food while finishing her studies in Malawi, will also talk about the place Mary’s Meals occupies in her life.

From 1-4 August 2023, Mary’s Meals will also have a stand at the City of Joy(Belém, in the Jardim Vasco da Gama) where pilgrims can come to find out more information about our work. You are very welcome to come and speak with one of our representatives there or bring your group to meet us!
