The parish community of St Benet’s, Netherton, came together recently for a joyful celebration marking 50 years in the present church building. Although the parish itself dates back to 1754, making it 271 years old, the milestone provided a wonderful opportunity to give thanks for the faith and dedication of generations of parishioners in the current building.
The anniversary Mass was celebrated by Bishop Tom Neylon, joined by Monsignor Anthony O’Brien, and Fr Sean O’Connor, all former priests of the parish, as well as friend of the parish Monsignor John Butchard.
Music was led by the choir of St Benedict’s School, who were themselves celebrating 20 years since the school’s opening. Over forty pupils filled the church with song, supported by musicians from St William of York Parish. Earlier in the week, Fr Bruce Walles, parish priest, had blessed a rosebush to mark the school’s anniversary in its new prayer garden, which Archbishop John Sherrington had blessed only weeks before.
During his homily, Bishop Tom noted two further causes for celebration: Fr Bruce’s 10th anniversary as parish priest, and Fr Sean O’Connor’s 60th anniversary of ordination — a remarkable milestone of faithful service.
A full church of parishioners past and present, together with teachers, parents and pupils from St Benedict’s, ensured a fitting and joy-filled occasion. The celebration concluded with a parish party in the parish centre.
The Mass booklet included a timeline of notable moments in the parish’s history, including ordinations, anniversaries, and Benemerenti Medal awards — a testament to the enduring life and faith of St Benet’s community.
“It was a wonderful celebration of 50 years in our present building,” commented Fr Bruce. “We were grateful to the two music groups for joining us, and for parishioners past and present.”
