March 9, 2026

St James’ Catholic Primary School, Skelmersdale, has marked an exciting milestone as pupils and staff returned from their first-ever overseas educational visit to Barcelona. The trip offered a rich blend of culture, faith, and adventure, giving pupils an experience they will remember for years to come.

One of the most moments of the visit took place at Barcelona Cathedral, where the group paused for an impromptu prayer. Together, they lit a candle in memory of the Nana of a Year 6 pupil, who sadly passed away over half term following a short battle with cancer.

Throughout the trip, pupils were immersed in the beauty and heritage of the city. They explored the vibrant mosaics of Park Güell, marvelled at the iconic exterior of the Sagrada Família, and enjoyed a memorable sunset meal at Poble Espanyol — a highlight that showcased the rich culture and lively atmosphere of Barcelona.

The itinerary also included a visit to Camp Nou, home of FC Barcelona, which thrilled football fans, and a scenic ride on the Montjuïc Cable Car, offering panoramic views of the coast and city skyline. There was even time for some shopping, where the slide into Sephora proved unexpectedly popular!

Pupils embraced the opportunity to practise their Spanish with locals and, with more than 50,000 steps covered in just a few days, made the most of exploring every corner of this remarkable city.

It was a fantastic first step into international travel for St James’ Catholic Primary School, and one that will be remembered for many years to come.
