Pope Leo’s personal representative, the Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, His Excellency Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía has completed his visitation to the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

In his first formal pastoral visit to the archdiocese since May 2025, Archbishop Maury Buendia spent five days in the archdiocese meeting clergy, religious, Catholic educators, hundreds of school children, and parish communities across the archdiocese.

He also took part in an encounter with civil and religious leaders at Liverpool Cathedral; celebrated Mass at St Oswald’s Church, Old Swan to mark the 175th anniversary of the Sisters of Mercy at the parish and presided at evening prayer at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King for the whole archdiocese – a celebration which marked 175 years of the Chapter of Canons.

Following ‘A Concert for the Nuncio’ on Saturday evening at St Francis de Sales Church, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía addressed the people of the Archdiocese of Liverpool and said: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

At the final event of his visit, Choral Evening Prayer at the cathedral, he added: “I would like to thank Archbishop John Sherrington and the people of the archdiocese for such a kind welcome. I bring you the blessings and greetings from Pope Leo XIV.”

Archbishop John Sherrington, Archbishop of Liverpool added: "I would like to thank Archbishop Buendía for spending time with us here in the Archdiocese of Liverpool. It has been a great pleasure to welcome him and to share with him the life and mission of the archdiocese.

“His visit has involved a busy and varied programme, giving him the opportunity to meet a wide cross-section of people from across the archdiocese, including religious communities, hundreds of schoolchildren, parishioners and our civic, ecumenical and inter-faith partners.

“I am deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed to making his visit so memorable and who extended such a warm and generous welcome."

The Apostolic Nuncio is the Holy Father's personal representative and serves as the Holy See's ambassador to Great Britain. His visit is a significant occasion for the archdiocese, displaying and further strengthening our communion with Pope Leo XIV and the Church across the world.
