Sunday 1 June marks World Communications Day, a time for Catholics across the world to reflect on the power of communication and to pray for all who work in the field.
This annual observance is also an opportunity to give thanks for those who serve the Church through media and communications, especially those helping to share the Good News in our own Archdiocese of Liverpool.
The theme for this year’s World Day of Social Communications– chosen by the late Pope Francis – is:
‘Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts’.
You can read Pope Francis’ full message, explore prayers and intercessions for the day, and, if you are able, support the work of the Communications Directorate at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, below:

Bishop John Arnold on this Year’s Theme
In the latest episode of the Catholic News podcast, Bishop John Arnold, Lead Bishop for Communications, reflects on Pope Francis’ final World Communications Day message and how Pope Leo XIV has already begun to shape the future of Church communications.
Pope Leo XIV: ‘Disarm words, and we will help disarm the world’
Just days into his pontificate, Pope Leo XIV met with journalists reporting on the transition from Pope Francis. In a powerful address, he emphasised the vital role of media in building peace and dialogue:
“We must say ‘no’ to the war of words and images; we must reject the paradigm of war.”
“Let us disarm communication of all prejudice and resentment, fanaticism and even hatred. Let us disarm words, and we will help disarm the world.”
The Holy Father called for a new kind of communication – one rooted in truth, humility, and love:
“The way we communicate is of fundamental importance. Communication is not only the transmission of information, but it is also the creation of a culture, of human and digital environments that become spaces for dialogue and discussion.”
He reaffirmed the Church’s solidarity with journalists who face persecution, reminding us that “only informed individuals can make free choices.”
