Ellie Leatherbarrow has been part of Animate for six years, and no two days ever look the same.
“Every day is completely different,” she says. “Some mornings start early with prayer, sometimes as early as 6.30am. Then we head into schools to lead sessions on themes like caring for others or new beginnings. Other days we’re back at Animate running day retreats.”
A retreat day involves getting everything ready for the young people arriving. That means preparing resources, setting up the prayer space, and shaping the day around the school’s chosen theme. Ellie is also involved in planning for the annual Lourdes pilgrimage, helping to prepare materials that support young people in looking after the pilgrims and making the most of the experience. And the work doesn’t stop there. “We live where we work,” she says. “So some days that means helping in the garden or getting other practical things sorted around the house. There’s a real mix in what we do.”
What she enjoys most is seeing young people grow in their faith. “It’s really special when someone we met in Year 6 recognises us in Year 7. Recently we’ve seen so many wanting to be welcomed into the Church. They’ve found something meaningful and want to take that next step.” People are often surprised by how much the team does. “We’re supporting around 1,500 young people doing the Faith in Action Award. We run retreats, help with the start of the confirmation process, and support the coaches heading to Lourdes. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that people don’t always realise.”
