The Catholic social action group has been busy over the past couple of months! Here are some of their summer updates.
Fifteen Care for Creation leaders were trained on the 17 May in Wigan and Leigh, representing the parishes of Our Lady’s, Bryn; St. Catherine & All Saints, Golborne; St. Lewis, Croft and St Oswald and St Edmund, Ashton-in-Makerfield. Some of their ideas for climate action in the archdiocese include transforming wasteland into food growing space; auditing transport services to parishes; and promoting meat abstinence Fridays.
Pablo Guidi from our Pastoral Development team has been working with the Environmental Task Group to prepare a briefing, which the Archbishop delivered to the Bishops’ Conference at Easter. The next steps for the archdiocese are to sign off the Environmental Policy and to develop an environmental strategy and a net zero pathway. Our last event, “Investments as a Force for Good?”, was a great success and gave us plenty of great ideas for enacting environmental change.
Pablo also created a pilot framework for developing social action in deaneries, and worked with Our Lady Mount Carmel (OLMC) parish to host an event day. This event brought together several communities, including parishes like OLMC, St Patricks, St Vincent’s, St Annes, Sacred Heart and St Michael, as well as MOWLL (who are a Liverpool-grown organisation dedicated to promoting social inclusion for people with learning disabilities, mental health issues and acquired brain injury), and Family Refugee Support (who support refugees and people seeking asylum to improve their mental health through therapy, and to achieve settlement and independence in the UK). They were also thrilled to have the assistance of two teachers and 10 students from St Patrick's school.
Their next step will be to support OLMC in a joint funding bid with MOWLL for further community work.
