Hundreds of children from across the archdiocese gathered for two Good Shepherd Masses in June.

Hundreds of children from schools across the Archdiocese of Liverpool gathered for two Good Shepherd Masses in June, celebrating the generosity and compassion shown through this year’s Good Shepherd Appeal in support of Nugent.

The first Mass, celebrated by Archbishop John Sherrington, took place at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral on Thursday 25 June.

Reflecting on the Gospel of the Good Shepherd in his homily, Archbishop Sherrington invited the children to consider the importance of water on a hot day, and how shepherds in the Holy Land would lead their sheep from one oasis to another to drink.

He explained that, just as sheep recognise and trust the voice of their shepherd, Christians are called to recognise the voice of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who leads and nourishes his people.

The archbishop reminded those gathered that the Eucharist is like an oasis where we are fed by Christ through His word and the gift of His body and blood. He encouraged everyone to listen for the voice of Jesus and, at the end of Mass, to go out and put their faith into action by loving and serving their neighbour.

The Schools Singing Programme led the music throughout the Mass. Around 900 pupils from 28 schools across the archdiocese took part, with approximately 350 members of the congregation also joining the celebration.

Danny Townley, Director of the Schools Singing Programme, praised the remarkable contribution of the young singers.

He said: “Thank you to all the schools who sang as part of the choir. Having a choir of nearly 1,000 young singers shows the strength and vitality of our Schools Singing Programme. A special thank you to all of the SSP Choral Directors who work tirelessly throughout the year to bring these wonderful opportunities to our Catholic schools and pupils.”

A second Good Shepherd Mass took place on Tuesday 30 June at St Mary’s Church, Leyland. Around 200 children attended the celebration, which was led by Fr Joe Bibby, concelebrated by Fr Michael Barrett and assisted by Deacon Paul Rooney, a trustee of Nugent. The music was provided by St Mary’s parish music group.

Across both celebrations, 49 schools from throughout the archdiocese took part, recognising the fundraising efforts of pupils, staff and families during Lent.

Now in its 124th year, the Good Shepherd Appeal continues to support Nugent’s vital services for children and young people across the region.

Jo Henney, Chief Executive Officer of Nugent, said: “It was a privilege to welcome 49 schools from across the Archdiocese of Liverpool to our annual Good Shepherd Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral. Each year, this special celebration is an opportunity to recognise the incredible generosity, compassion and commitment shown by children and young people who have supported the Good Shepherd Appeal throughout Lent.

“The fundraising carried out by our schools is about far more than raising money. It is a powerful expression of faith in action, demonstrating kindness, solidarity and a genuine desire to help others. Every donation helps Nugent continue providing vital support to individuals and families across our communities.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to every pupil, teacher, parish and family who has taken part in this year’s appeal. Your dedication and generosity make a real difference, and together we are helping to ensure that people facing life’s challenges receive the support they need, when they need it most.”
