On Wednesday 22 July, hundreds of pilgrims left the archdiocese for Lourdes.

Archbishop John Sherrington left Liverpool John Lennon airport in the morning alongside priests, pilgrims and members of the Hospitalite team.

Seven coaches of young people left points across the archdiocese as they began a 24 hour coach journey to the south of France.

In the evening, Archbishop John celebrated Mass for the feast of St Mary Magdalene. In his homily, he said: “We have arrived safely and we thank God. Fellow pilgrims continue their journey here so that we all gather by Friday for the Opening Mass.

“We have been called to the grotto just as St. Bernadette was called down to the cave by the river on that cold and misty February morning, the grotto, where Our Blessed Lady appeared to her. Our desire is to be there. We carry with us our prayers and petitions and give thanks to God. “
