Celebrating Priesthood 2026
I remember being in Nottingham Cathedral when the relics of St Thérèse came on pilgrimage (2009). There was a profound sense of being in the presence of holiness. I had a feeling of awe and wonder but also unworthiness. It was a very existential moment as the crowds queued, visited, prayed and touched the holiness of the saint. St Thérèse writes that she was profoundly aware of her calling – Jesus went up the mountain, called those he wanted... to be with him and sent them out – that she was wanted by Jesus not because she was the best, or the most worthy, but wanted by him for his mission. We too are called because we are wanted by him, not because we are the most worthy or the best, but chosen.
