There was a real sense of joy and thanksgiving at Christ the King Catholic High School & Sixth Form Centre as the school community came together to celebrate its Diamond Jubilee year.
Sixty years ago, the doors of Christ the King first opened to welcome pupils and staff, many of whom had transferred from nearby Our Lady of Lourdes school, which continues to flourish as a valued part of the local family of Catholic primary schools.
To mark this significant milestone, the school has been reflecting on its rich history while looking ahead to the future. Celebrations began on the school’s feast day in November, when pupils took part in a series of workshops exploring the school’s heritage and mission.
A special highlight of the jubilee year came with a reunion held exactly 60 years to the day since the school was officially opened by Archbishop Beck. Former pupils and staff returned to reconnect, reminisce, and celebrate the school community and the impact it has had on their lives.
Mass was celebrated by Fr Robert Marsh OSA, one of four former pupils who have followed their vocation to the priesthood, three of whom continue to minister within the archdiocese. He was joined by clergy with longstanding links to the school, including priests from local parishes, in a Mass of thanksgiving.
Among the many who attended from each of the six decades of our school were members of the school’s very first intake of pupils, as well as the school’s first Head Boy, Dr David Flavell. Alongside current head students, he took part in the liturgy by leading the readings - a wonderful connection between past and present.
Following Mass, guests enjoyed refreshments and had the opportunity to revisit former classrooms and favourite gathering spots, prompting many happy memories and shared stories.
The celebrations are set to continue for current pupils with a whole-school Mass on 16 July. As part of the occasion, the school will present a time capsule to be buried, alongside other commemorative projects marking six decades of Catholic education and community in Southport.
As Christ the King celebrates this important anniversary, the school gives thanks for 60 years of growing, learning, serving, and praying - and looks forward with hope to many more to come.
