Our schools are currently resting up after completing another half-term.

Here is a roundup of what some of our schools have been up to since they returned from the Easter holidays.

Primary schools

St Bernadette’s in the news

Wigan Today recently ran a piece on St Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery in Shevington, about them becoming the first Rotakids in the borough.

Rotakids is a part of Rotary Britain and Ireland, and allows children to be involved in community projects such as: Filling shoeboxes with toys for underprivileged children around the world as part of the Rotary Shoebox Scheme, raising money for charities in their area with a sponsored bike ride, non-uniform day, cake sale or school fun days, supporting the environment by setting a nature project in the school playground or local community, collecting books for children in countries around the world.

The Mayor of Wigan, Councillor Jenny Bullen, was also in attendance at the school, along with members of the Wigan Rotary Group. See more here: Shevington St Bernadette’s Primary celebrates being first RotaKids in Wigan

St Bridget’s to feature in documentary

Year 4 students at St Bridget’s Catholic Primary School in Warrington were involved in the filming of a new BBC documentary ‘Clean up with Stacey’ with TV personality Stacey Dooley. The programme, which features community litter pickers, is expected to air in early 2027.

Praise from Ofsted

St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School in Burtonwood, Warrington made the local newspaper after being highly praised by Ofsted for having a strong sense of belonging – well done all!

Well done, Mrs Rawlinson

Mrs Rawlinson, headteacher at St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School in St Helens ran the London Marathon last month and raised just shy of £2,500 for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

Secondary schools

Christ the King celebrates Jubilee

Christ the King Catholic High School in Southport, recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.

They held a celebration for former pupils. Among those in attendance were Assistant Director of Education and former student Ben McMullen!

More alumni make Wigan debuts

St John Fisher had three more students make their debuts for Wigan Warriors rugby club in their Super League clash against Hull KR. George O’Loughlin, son of another former alumni and Warriors legend Sean, Austin Daniel and Taylor Kerr, who captained the young side, all walked out for Wigan at the home of the Super League champions.

TV success for Carmel alumni

Former Carmel College student Jo Diop recently won the BBC show Race Across the World, alongside his friend Kush. Well done!

General

Archbishop launched his vision for the future of Catholic education

During this half term, Archbishop John Sherrington launched his vision for the future of Catholic Education.  Under the strapline: “A Family in Christ: Our Future Together” the vision sets out plans to develop families of schools that work collaboratively to secure and enhance future Catholic education in the archdiocese.

The vision outlines that all Catholic schools in the archdiocese will be invited to join three Catholic Multi Academy Trusts (CMATs) joining either the two existing CMATs of St Joseph Catholic Multi Academy Trust and Pope Francis Catholic Multi Academy Trust or a new CMAT which will be established- Our Lady of Lourdes North West Catholic Academy Trust.
